Ivan Tzankov, Managing Director of AES Bulgaria
For 10 years, TPP AES Galabovo has proven its key role for Bulgaria's energy security
June 11, 2021
Mr. Tzankov, this month TPP AES Galabovo marks 10 years since its commissioning. Do you think the power plant is still of key importance for Bulgaria’s energy security?
Yes, it is a fact that in June, the newest and most modern thermal power plant in Bulgaria - TPP AES Galabovo, celebrates 10 years since its commissioning. It is an extremely high-tech facility that would be the pride of any energy system. No matter which indicator you will choose to assess it – speed, maneuverability, environmental regulations, implemented innovations and processes regarding power generation and environmental protection, TPP AES Galabovo is the leading thermal power plant in the country. And, we are proud to operate such a facility. Regarding its significance for Bulgaria – it is indisputable. With its 690 MW of installed capacity, TPP AES Galabovo guarantees the production of up to 10% of the required electricity for Bulgaria, but it also provides a number of system services for dispatching to the national electricity network operated by ESO. In addition, TPP AES Galabovo is a key employer in the region of Stara Zagora and Galabovo, employing about 4000 people – directly and indirectly. TPP AES Galabovo is also important for the local community in Galabovo because it implements a large number of CSR projects in education, healthcare, sports, young people development, which are all vital for the community in Galabovo. For these 10 years, the total investments of TPP AES Galabovo in CSR have amounted to more than BGN 13 million. These are funds to improve the life of the local communities and the development of the region.
How do you see the future of TPP AES Galabovo in the light of the Green Deal?
The EU Green Deal is definitely a huge challenge, not only for Bulgaria but also for the other member states. At the same time, this is a great opportunity for the transition to a low-carbon economy. However, this process should be approached very carefully, taking into account all characteristics of the individual member states. It is not a secret that the energy production from coal in Bulgaria represents more than 40% of the total mix. This is a significant share. The coal-fired power plants are vital not only for providing energy but because of the system services that guarantee the stability of the electricity system as well as for employing thousands of workers and guaranteeing the income for their families.
Are there any advanced solutions to allow us to both keep our coal capacities and make our energy sector greener?
There is such a potential technological solution – the so-called carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems. By now, in Bulgaria, only preliminary researches have been made on the topic, based on other countries’ experience, that are ahead in the implementation of such projects. Together with the colleagues from the other TPPs and the mines, we are launching a project under the leadership of the University of Mining and Geology to explore the geological options for CO2 storage in the region of the Maritza East complex. These are serious investments, which at this stage cannot be made only by the investors, i. e. clear state policy and guarantees are needed.
What is the role of natural gas in making Bulgaria’s energy sector greener?
It is important to know that coal is a strategic local resource, which contributes to Bulgaria’s energy independence.. Theoretically, the transition of coal-fired power plants to natural gas is possible. But we should see what the cost of this transformation is and whether it is worth it. AES Bulgaria welcomes Bulgaria’s willingness to connect the Maritza East complex to a gas pipeline which will allow the transition of the TPPs to natural gas. It is noteworthy that the EU doesn’t have a decision yet whether gas will be used as a transitional fuel to a 100% carbon-free energy sector. After all, it is clear that even if the power plants at the Maritza complex switch to natural gas, sooner or later they will have to prepare for the ‘green’ future such as hydrogen is.
In April, AES Bulgaria presented its new brand. What is behind the overall rebranding of the company?
Yes, on April 13, AES Bulgaria, part of The AES Corporation, presented its new brand identity, which reflects the commitment of the company and the global transition toward a more sustainable energy future. Our new and exciting visual identity reflects our values and goal while we continue to explore and create greener and smarter energy solutions, which the world needs. The new vision tells the story of AES Bulgaria’s journey to a better and more sustainable future for the whole world. Together, we accelerate the future of energy.
