AES continues working on the transformation of Bulgaria's most advanced coal-fired power plant

AES’ TPP in Galabovo achieves record generation in November

December 18, 2024

AES’ TPP in Galabovo reported record electricity production in November. Bulgaria’s most modern coal-fired power plant generated nearly 305,000 MWh of electricity last month, marking the highest monthly production since the start of 2024. This amount of energy is equivalent to the average monthly consumption of approximately 1 million Bulgarian households.

Once again, AES’ TPP in Galabovo demonstrates its key role in ensuring Bulgaria’s energy security, delivering reliable power according to the national energy system's dispatching needs. In addition to serving as a vital generating capacity, AES’ TPP in Galabovo provides critical services to the energy system, thanks to its rapid maneuverability.

AES places a high priority on Bulgaria’s energy security. Therefore, transforming AES’ TPP in Galabovo, already the most modern and environmentally friendly coal-fired power plant in the Balkans, remains a top priority for the company. AES is committed to transforming the plant the plant into an innovative energy facility that will not only contribute to reducing carbon emissions but also continue to guarantee Bulgaria's energy stability.

To achieve this transformation, AES has developed two key projects. The first one plans to convert one unit of the plant to an energy storage facility utilizing molten salt technology. According to the second project, the second unit will be upgraded and will transition from coal to SRF and/or biomass.

AES is currently exploring opportunities to access various sources of EU funding, such as the Innovation Fund, Modernization Fund, and Just Transition Fund, and promoting the development of capacity mechanisms in Bulgaria. Preserving the power plant as an energy facility will guarantee the country’s energy security.
