AES’ TPP in Galabovo celebrates 11 years since its commissioning

In June 2022, AES’ TPP in Galabovo celebrates 11 years since its commissioning. Since the start of its operations to date, the most modern coal-fired power plant in Bulgaria has generated around 33 250 GWh of reliable energy for the Bulgarian consumers. The electricity produced by AES’ TPP in Galabovo during 11 years is approximately equal to Bulgaria’s total consumption for a year. This is also approximately equal to the consumption of all Bulgarian households for two years. 

During 11 years of operation, the 690 MW power plant has used over 56,3 million tons of lignite coal. AES’ TPP in Galabovo operates only with Bulgarian coal mined in the state-run Mini Maritza East. Using local energy resources guarantees not only the energy independence of the country but also the jobs of thousands of miners. 

AES’ TPP in Galabovo is the most technologically advanced coal-fired TPP in the country, and in addition to its power generation, it also plays a key role in many system services for dispatching the grid that the power plant provides to ESO.

Environment protection is also among AES Bulgaria top priorities. For that reason, the power plant is designed so that it cannot produce electricity without a working flue gas desulphurization system. The desulphurization system's continuous operations guarantee cleaner air and a responsible attitude to the environment. During these 11 years AES’ TPP in Galabovo has achieved an efficiency rate of the desulphurization system of over 97,5%.
