AES’ TPP in Galabovo generates record electricity output in January

February 11, 2025

AES’ TPP in Galabovo provided a record amount of electricity to Bulgarian consumers in the first month of 2025. The two power units of Bulgaria’s most modern coal-fired power plant generated over 338,302 MWh of electricity in January. This is the power plant’s largest output for the month of January for the past six years. The electricity produced by AES’ TPP in Galabovo at the start of the year covered more than 8% of Bulgaria’s total consumption for the period. In other words, every twelfth KWh of electricity used by Bulgarian consumers in January 2025 was generated with Bulgarian lignite at the country’s newest TPP.

We are proud that AES’ TPP in Galabovo once again demonstrates its critical role in ensuring the country's energy independence and guaranteeing energy supplies to Bulgarian customers at a socially affordable price,’ said Ivan Tzankov, Managing Director of AES Bulgaria.

In addition to serving as a vital generating capacity, AES’ TPP in Galabovo provides critical dispatching services to the energy system, thanks to its rapid maneuverability.

‘Bulgaria's energy security is a priority in our work. Therefore, transforming AES’ TPP in Galabovo, already the most modern and environmentally friendly coal-fired power plant in the Balkans, remains a top priority for the company,’ Ivan Tzankov added.

He noted that AES is actively working on transforming the power plant into an innovative energy facility that will reduce CO2 emissions while continuing to serve as a key pillar of Bulgaria’s energy stability. For this purpose, two transformation projects are currently being developed. One project aims to convert one power unit into a molten salt-based energy storage facility, while the other will upgrade the second unit to switch from coal burning to SRF from processed municipal waste and/or biomass. Currently, AES actively considers opportunities to access various EU funding mechanisms, including the Innovation Fund, the Modernization Fund, and the Just Transition Fund, as well as encourages the development of flexibility mechanisms in Bulgaria.
