AES’ TPP in Galabovo produced nearly 2 million MWh of electricity in 2024

January 10, 2025

The most modern coal-fired power plant in Bulgaria – AES’ TPP in Galabovo, generated 1,929,435 MWh of electricity in 2024. Thus, the power plant's two units provided 5% of the energy consumed in the country last year.

The electricity generated by AES’ TPP in Galabovo in 2024 is 6.4% more than the amount generated in 2023. In the month of December alone, the plant's electricity production equaled 342,160 MWh - a record-high monthly output for the past 2024. The electricity produced by AES’ TPP in Galabovo during the month was equal to 9% of the total electricity consumed in Bulgaria.

AES’ TPP in Galabovo thus once again proves its essential role in the country's energy independence and in guaranteeing the energy supply to Bulgaria's consumers. The power plant is key to ensuring the static and dynamic stability of the country's energy system, as well as maintaining voltage levels and the balance of the reactive power in the electricity transmission grid.

‘We are happy that with its operations, AES’ TPP in Galabovo, which uses entirely local energy resource - lignite coal- contributes to providing reliable electricity for Bulgarian consumers. We are working on transforming the plant to retain its role as a stable and secure energy producer,’ stated Ivan Tzankov, Market Business Leader of AES Bulgaria.
