Record-breaking February for Bulgaria’s most advanced coal plant — AES’ TPP in Galabovo

March 11, 2025

Bulgaria’s most modern coal-fired power plant, AES’ TPP in Galabovo, achieved a new milestone last month. The power plant produced the highest amount of electricity for any February since its commissioning to date. During the freezing days of the past month, AES’ TPP in Galabovo supplied 343,459 MWh of electricity to Bulgarian consumers. This accounted for over 9 percent of the country's total consumption for the period. In other words, one in every eleven KWh of electricity used by Bulgarian consumers during the freezing month of February was generated from a domestically sourced energy resource at the country’s most environmentally friendly coal-fired power plant.

“AES’ TPP in Galabovo continues to play a critical role for ensuring Bulgaria’s energy security, providing reliable electricity from Bulgarian lignite to consumers across the country without a single disruption, even on the coldest days of February,” said Ivan Tzankov, Managing Director of AES Bulgaria. In addition to being an important generating facility, AES’ TPP in Galabovo also provides critical dispatching services for the energy system, thanks to its high operational flexibility.
