In 2023, Bulgaria's largest wind farm provided enough green energy to cover the yearly consumption of over 100,000 Bulgarian households
A record year for Saint Nikola Wind Farm
January 12, 2024
AES Bulgaria has set a new record. The company’s Saint Nikola Wind Farm reported its peak year in terms of energy generation. In 2023, the wind farm generated 372,485 MWh of green electricity. This is the largest amount of electricity produced by the wind park since its commissioning in 2010.
Last year, the 52 turbines of Bulgaria's largest wind farm produced over 5% more wind energy for Bulgarian consumers compared to 2022. The green energy generated by Saint Nikola Wind Farm during the year is equal to the annual consumption of more than 100,000 Bulgarian households. This means that last year, all households in the Dobrich and Silistra regions were more environmentally friendly and used entirely wind energy. Thus, AES Bulgaria has once again demonstrated consistency with the trend where Saint Nikola WPP ensures greener power consumption for thousands of households in North-eastern Bulgaria.
Saint Nikola Wind Farm generated 42,290 MWh of energy in the last month of 2023 alone.
St. Nikola Wind Farm is the backbone of the Integrated Early Warning System for Bird Protection which fully complies with the European requirements for the preservation of wild birds. The system minimizes the risk of birds colliding with the rotating parts of the wind turbines by shutting down a single, group of turbines or entire wind farms. The system includes also a monitoring program for birds of conservation value during the risk periods.
