St. Nikola wind farm marks a record-breaking September output

St. Nikola wind farm marked a record-breaking September output. AES Bulgaria’s wind farm generated 29,777 MWh of renewable electricity for Bulgarian consumers last month. This is the wind farm’s highest output for September since the park was commissioned in 2010. Last month, the electricity generated by the St. Nikola wind farm was over 45% higher than in the same month in 2022.

The total electricity generated by the country’s largest wind farm in the first nine months of 2023 is 263,569 MWh. The fifty-two wind turbines in St. Nikola farm generated enough electricity to power nearly 100,000 average Bulgarian households for nine months.

The St. Nikola wind Farm is a crucial step toward Bulgaria’s objective of a greener energy future, significantly increasing the country’s RES generation potential. The wind park, located near Kavarna, has a total capacity of 156 MW. St. Nikola wind farm is at the core of the established Integrated Early Warning System for bird protection. It complies with the European wild bird conservation requirements and was crucial for the Bern Convention Standing Committee’s decision to close the Kaliakra case at the end of 2022. With this ruling, Strasbourg acknowledged that wind farms in the region are safe for biodiversity.
