AES Bulgaria, part of New York-listed AES Corporation, said on Thursday that the operation of its majority-owned Saint Nikola Wind Farm has saved the country 28.5% more carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2019 compared to 2018.
The operation of the 156 MW wind park saved Bulgaria 323,277 t of carbon dioxide emissions last year, compared with 251,593 t in 2018, AES Bulgaria said in a statement.
Saint Nikola Wind Farm, operated by AES Geo Energy, produced 291 GWh of electricity last year, the company said. This compares to 318 GWh generated in 2018, according to figures reported by AES Bulgaria at the beginning of 2019.
AES Geo Energy is a joint venture of AES and Germany's Geo Power company.
The wind farm located near the town of Kavarna, on the Black Sea coast, consists of 52 turbines of 3 MW each. It was built in 2009 and commenced operations in 2010. The total investment in the project was 270 million euro ($300.0 million), of which 198 million euro was provided by a bank consortium including the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the International Finance Corporation and UniCredit Market & Investment Banking.
